About

A small kitchen and a lot of Sundays

I'm Nora Keane. I grew up in Castlebar, moved to Dublin for college in 2009 and never left. By day I work in a library in Rathmines. In the evenings I cook, slowly, in a flat where the kitchen is a corner of the living room. The Slow Kitchen started in the winter of 2021 as a letter to six friends who kept asking how I made things on two rings. It now goes out to a few thousand people every Sunday, and it is still written the same way: one thing I cooked that week, what went wrong, and how to make it in a kitchen as small as mine. On Sundays I walk in the Wicklow hills with a flask of soup and a brown bread sandwich, and most of what I write starts out there.

What you will find here

Four things in every letter

  • 1

    Recipes for two rings

Everything is cooked on a small hob and a single oven shelf, with the pot sizes and timings to match.

  • 2

    Food that waits for you

Soups that are better the next day, bread that keeps, and things to freeze in March for September.

  • 3

    What the season gives

Blackberries, wild garlic and windfall apples from the edges of Dublin, picked with care and a hard box.

  • 4

    Stories from the kitchen

My mother's recipe cards, my grandmother's rules, and what happens when I get it wrong.
